Hello. I'm Doyoon Kim, and I make porcelain in Bunwon-ri, Gwangju — a place that has been at the center of Korean white porcelain since the Joseon dynasty. I'm glad you found your way here. I didn't study ceramics formally. Most of what I know came from years of working alone — making things, taking them apart, and trying again. That process is still how I work today, and I don't think it will change.

I work without molds or machinery. Each piece is hand-built, shaped through repeated contact with the clay until the form settles into something that feels honest. I don't rush that. Some pieces take much longer than expected, and some never get finished at all. I've made peace with that.

My work is almost entirely functional — bowls, cups, jars. Things meant to be held and used, not set aside. I believe an object earns its place through use, not appearance. If a piece sits untouched on a shelf, I'm not sure it's doing its job.

I think a lot about why certain forms have lasted for centuries. Not to copy them, but to understand what they got right — and whether that still matters now. Tradition, to me, is not something to preserve behind glass. It's a conversation worth continuing.

I don't make many pieces. I'd rather make fewer things well than many things quickly. Thank you for taking the time to look.

안녕하세요. 저는 광주 분원리에서 도자기를 만들고 있는 김도윤입니다. 분원리는 조선시대부터 한국 백자의 중심이 되어온 마을입니다. 이곳에 찾아와 주셔서 감사합니다.

저는 도예를 정식으로 배우지 않았습니다. 지금 알고 있는 대부분은 혼자 작업실에서 보낸 시간 속에서 익혔습니다. 만들고, 부수고, 다시 시작하는 과정을 반복하면서요. 지금도 그 방식은 크게 다르지 않습니다.

틀이나 기계는 사용하지 않습니다. 모든 작업은 손으로 이루어지며, 형태가 스스로 자리를 잡는다는 느낌이 들 때까지 계속 손을 댑니다. 서두르지 않으려고 합니다. 생각보다 오래 걸리는 작업도 있고, 끝내 완성하지 못하는 것도 있습니다. 그것도 작업의 일부라고 생각합니다.

작업의 대부분은 일상적인 기물입니다. 그릇, 컵, 항아리처럼 쓰기 위한 것들이요. 저는 물건이 사용을 통해 비로소 제 자리를 찾는다고 생각합니다. 선반 위에 놓인 채 손길이 닿지 않는다면, 그 물건은 제 역할을 다하지 못한 게 아닐까 싶습니다.

오랜 시간 살아남은 형태들에 대해 자주 생각합니다. 그것을 그대로 따르려는 게 아니라, 무엇이 그 형태를 지속시켰는지 이해하고 싶어서입니다. 전통은 유리 너머로 보존하는 것이 아니라, 계속해서 이어나가야 할 대화라고 생각합니다.

많은 작업을 하지는 않습니다. 빠르게 많이 만드는 것보다, 적게 만들더라도 제대로 만드는 쪽을 택하고 싶습니다. 천천히 둘러봐 주시면 감사하겠습니다.
